And suddenly, Mail.app let’s all spam through (again) November 22, 2008

It has happened to me in the past, again: suddenly, Mail.app refuses to filter spam mail to the junk folders. This time it happened after a kernel panic which forced me to cold-reboot with Mail.app running. Previous times it just happened. What do you do then? I had tried resetting filtering criteria through the relevant preferences panel, rebuilding indexes, anything I could think off. Eventually I always ended up clearing up anything relevant to Mail.app and importing my old email, to start over training with a clean set up.

Today with some more searching online I found this. I didn’t have to follow the whole advice, just deleting LSMMap2 did the trick — but maybe you will need the whole thing if it happens to you.

You remember Minority Report and the fancy HCI methods? Well, it’s here (and it’s no coincidence, as you’ll see if you read the text). Did someone scream “technical computing use case”?

We live in interesting times. I just can’t wait until these things become commodity.

This may be old news for many people, but I just found out about Dopplr. Way cool service that lets you synchronise with fellow frequent travellers and, who knows, maybe meet up at an airport or a city pub for a beer or three. It’s funny, I was thinking of building this kind of service a couple of years back, I’m happy that someone else did it for me — and it’s quite a good job. I’m sure it will get better and better.

I don’t think I’ve blogged here before about music — well, there’s always a first time. I had not listened to this song for some time now, so when it came up on radio this morning I remembered how much I like it. Enjoy: “Roscoe”, by Midlake.

Wow. This is what you get when you combine the expressive power of a decent calculator with an interface which is simple but makes perfect sense. I never thought that a calculator app can actually impress me.

If only they could turn it into a widget…

I ran a small readability experiment on a 1-page document, including text only. From all the fonts I tried, Microsoft’s Corbel was the best. Of course it’s a matter of preference, but judging only by how easy it was to read quickly through the text, this font was the least painful to my eyes.

I’m not using Windows and I don’t like Microsoft, but this is the best font I have ever used for plain text in word processors.

This is very funny 🙂 Two comedians from a Canadian radio station are calling Sarah Palin pretending one of them is president Sarkozy.
